Third son of Edward and Anna Sayre. He was born in Garrett, Oklahoma, where his father ranched briefly before moving to Elizabethtown, New Mexico, and then to Morley, Colorado, where Leslie and his siblings grew up. Leslie worked as a miner in his early years before marrying Pauline Pellegrini Miller on June 28, 1922. The couple had three sons, Leslie Jr., Harry, Charles, and one daughter, Joyce. Leslie's parents and siblings (excluding Olive) all moved to California in about 1925, but Leslie stayed in Colorado where he worked as a weighmaster for the railroad. Leslie and Pauline lived for a few years in Berwind, Colorado, before relocating to Trinidad, where they would spend most of their married life.
