Esther Goldwasser Natt, passed away on August 5, 2007. She was born July 4, 1910 in New York City, where she remained until 1935 when she married and moved to Roanoke, Va. Preceding her in death were her husband, Dr. Jerome Natt, parents Abraham and Lillian Goldwasser, brother, Dr. Martin Goldwasser and sister, Natalie Altman. She is survived by two sons, Richard Natt and Edward Natt and wife Claire; daughter, Barbara Peery, all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Robert Natt and wife Angela, J. Allen Natt, all of Roanoke, and Terry Bennett of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two great-grandchildren, John and Brittany Bennett. The Great Depression and untimely death of her father necessitated that she forsake her plans for college in order to support the family. After quickly completing the requirements for her teacher's certificate, she began teaching English at age nineteen in the public schools of New York City. In Roanoke, she was an active member of Temple Emanuel, where she served as Sisterhood President in 1950 and Secretary of the Board for many years. She volunteered for the American Red Cross and the Association for Retarded Citizens. Suddenly widowed in 1959 with three young children and an elderly mother, she wold World Book Encyclopedia, substitute taught and eventually settled at Kenrose Manufacturing Co. doing secretarial work. In 1961 she was awarded Mother of the Year. Even though she faces many challenges, she accomplished much during her lifetime. Although always an avid reader and gardener, it was not until her retirement in 1975 that she was able to enthusiastically resume other favorite pursuits, particularly watercolors and pastels. She was a frugal manager, talented artist, expert seamstress, knitter, cook and baker. In all of the years she remained at home, she kept her freezer and pantry stocked with homemade bread, cookies, cakes, jams and jellies for the family to enjoy. She was an extremely intelligent, very refined and remarkable lady who was greatly admired.
