Story as told at the Schindel/Shindel/Shindle Reunion, Greencastle, PA 1986 by Latelle McKee LaFollette III about how his grandparents met.
The old doctor in Craigsville had passed away, and a new doctor arrived to replace him. The villagers continued to call him by the name of the old doctor, and he did not correct them. This new doctor began to date the postmistress in town, one Margaret Jane Schindel, dau. of Samuel Philip Schindel and Elizabeth Agnes Woods. They became engaged, and when they went to the Nicholas Co. Court House in Summerville, WV, he signed his name Elliott Rutherford Hatfield. He then told her who he was, the son of William Anderson Hatfield and Lavica Chafin, and that he was hiding out in Craigsville. She married him anyway, and they returned to his hometown in Logan Co. to continue his practice. There were four children in this family. Daniel who became an important researcher in children's diseases at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Thelma who married the lawyer Latelle McKee LaFollette II in Charleston, WV. Ewell Warren, and Forresy who married Joseph Francis Fletcher, Professor of Theology at Harvard University and later at the University of Virginia. Forrest also attended the Schindel/Shindel/Shindle Reunion in 1986 where she gave some vivid descriptions of her grandfather, Samuel Philip Schindel.
