Son of John Peter & Laura (Smith) Turner, born in the coal mining area (Malden) of Kanawha Co., Virginia #13 of 16 children. Civil War Veteran - Regiment 4 West Virginia Infantry, Union Army, Company A. In 1865 he married Lelia Ann Bailey, the daughter of James A. & Permelia (Payne) Bailey. He was the town recorder for at least one term, a member of the School Board and was Mayor of the City of Mason; 1894, 1905, 1911 and 1914. Between the years 1906 and 1911, the Mayor of Mason was the noted and widely acclaimed West Virginian Historian, Virgil A. Lewis.

Prominent Mason City Man Passed Away Yesterday
The residents of the Pomeroy Bend were greatly shocked yesterday when the news spread informing them of the death of H. C. Turner, a prominent and well known citizen of Mason City, yesterday morning following a short illiness of pneumonia. Deceased would have been 80 years old on the eight day of next month and had served several years as Mayor of Mason and represented several old line insurance companies for years, he was also secretary of the school board.
His wife preceded him in death last March and his daughter, Miss Sue, passed away the 15th of this month making three deaths in this family within six months. Deceased is survived by four sons and one daughter as follows: Lemuel of Washington, D.C.; William of Collinsville, IL; Morgan of Hargrove, AL; Cotton of Belle, W. Va.; Miss Nelle of Cincinnati, OH. The funeral will take place at the residence Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock conducted by Rev. Powers, pastor of the M. E. church.
