"Cott" as he was called, because his father was called "Henry" was an insurance Agent for the Hartford Fire Insurance Co. (an agency his Father started) and owner of a Gas and Oil Distributing Company. In 1926 he started a retail "Quaker State" Gas station, mechanics garage & body shop on the corner of 2nd and Pomeroy Street.
'Cott' died peacefully in his sleep, 9 Mar 1952 - age 70. His funeral of 12 March was so greatly attended that both porches of the funeral home held the overflow of attendees. He was interred at Adamsville Cemetery wearing a 50 year pin for faithful attendance, to the Mason Methodist Church. When 'Cott' died in 1952 he had been married to Caroline (Gygax) for 40 years and an Agent for the Hartford Insurance Co. for over 55 years. The Hartford Fire Insurance Company awarded him, 1947, a tri-colored gold pocket watch embossed with their familiar Stag logo, attached to a gold fob inscribed "50 years of service." Indicating he had been an agent since he was 16 years old. After his death, wife Caroline continued the agency until she reached the age of 70. Cott was Mayor of Mason City in 1913, 1920, 21, 22, 24 and 1938 plus other years of lost records. He was also a councilman for several terms and a member of the School Board.

Also of note; He was a volunteer firefighter. When the Hartford Ins. Co. (whom he was an agent) began giving an insurance discount to residents of communities' with fire departments. He among others residents formed one. Then about 1936 the insurance company required that a qualified fire department must have a pumper fire truck so he and his son, John, built one using an old tank truck and donated equipment.
