William Ritter was first buried in Block 12 in the plot of his parents. He was removed and reinterred in Block 36 in April 1941, after the death of his wife Mary. His name is carved on the older Ritter monument in Block 12 and he also has a newer stone in Block 36 with a different birth year, next to his wife.

Died, at 1:30 o'clock Monday morning, April 17, 1916, at the Springfield hospital, William F. Ritter, a well known contractor of this city, aged 56 years. He was born in this city and was educated in the Springfield public schools. For many years he was associated with his father Nicholas Ritter in the contracting business. He was a life long member of the Grace Lutheran church. He was also a member of the carpenter's union and of fraternal organizations.

The decedent is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Leona Condiff of this city; four brothers, Edward F. of Springfield; George H. of Joplin, Mo.; Charles G. of Eagle Butte, S. D.; Henry L. Ritter of Meenach, Cal; sister Mrs. Frank Thompson of Springfield. IL State Register, Springfield, IL, 4-18-1916
