Mrs. Brown, Nearly 101, Dies At Home
Mrs. Sarah Brown, who would have been 101 years old on Jan. 22, died late Monday at the Home for the Aged in 9th street after less than a week's illness. Until she became ill the Little Sisters of the Poor said, she had been up and about almost every day, even insisting on helping much younger residents at the home.
She still had her own teeth and did not wear glasses for reading until two years ago. Mrs. Brown always insisted that she had "never felt old" and her mind was alert until her death.
Born in Buchanan, Mich., she had spent most of her life in Troy. Her husband, the late Eugene Brown, died many years ago. Her five children also had died.
Mrs. Brown's father, fought in the Civil War and she could remember that, although only a child, she helped her mother with the work on their farm in Michigan and even minded the younger children.
She had lived with the Little Sisters of the Poor for several years and on her 100th birthday last January was given a party with children from St. Colman's Home to help her celebrate. There was birthday cake for all residents of the Home for the Aged.
Mrs. Brown is survived by a grandson and granddaughters.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. today from the chapel at the Home for the Aged. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
