Dorothy Frieda Wirtala, 99, of Beach Park, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2020, at home. She was born December 5, 1920, in Green Grove, Wisconsin to the late Edwin and Frieda (Schulte) Awe. On June 19, 1941, in Libertyville, Dorothy married Walfrid “Wally” Wirtala. Dorothy was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Waukegan and remained a member of the altar guild until she was 88 years old. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, needlework and was a member of the Green Bay Homemakers group. Dorothy is survived by her loving family, Corine Colbert, Richard Wirtala, Eileen Smith, Donald (Laura) Wirtala, and Laurie (Gerald, Sr.) Rodberg; grandchildren, Keith (Val) Rummel, Kevin (Cindy) Rummel, Christine (Ralph) Welch, Mark (Dawn) Rummel, Tim (Angela) Wirtala, Tom (Nancy) Wirtala, Jeff (Angela) Smith, Dan (Courtney) Wirtala, Kerianne (Tucker) Rosetto, Greg (Jen) Wirtala, Gerald, Jr. (Mistie) Rodberg, and James Rodberg; 19 great grandchildren; and 8 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wally Wirtala; daughter-in-law, Marty Wirtala; grandson, Andrew “Drew” Smith; and son-in-law, William “Bill” Smith. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be private at Highland Memorial Park, Gurnee. Arrangements entrusted to Sambrano Funeral & Cremation, Gurnee.
