Lieutenant Tom Gordon Hemming of Number 1 Commando led a section from 5 Troop for the Operation Chopper raid at Luc St Mer on 28 September 1941. His section came under heavy fire when it tried to land on the beach resulting in a number of wounded and two men dead. When he died in 1992 his ashes were buried next to the graves of his two lost men, whom he never forgot.
