After the tragic death of her mother in 1847, when Nancy was only 14, she moved in with a sister's family and apparently had a brief marriage to an Ohio man, Demmington "Deming" James Marshall, who fathered their daughter, Annette, in 1854. She was working as a servant in 1863 when she married Richard Malafont , a baker, with whom she had two daughters, Barbara and Lizzie.
