Princess Mafalda of Savoy was the second daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and his wife Elena of Montenegro. She was married on September 23, 1925, at Racconigi Castle to Prince Philipp of Hesse, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, a grandson of German Emperor Frederick III and great-grandson of Queen Victoria.

Following the surrender of Italy to the Allies, she was placed in Buchenwald Concentration Camp by German authorities. She was severely injured on August 24, 1944 when the Allies bombed an ammunition factory inside Buchenwald. She died as a result of her injuries during the early morning hours on August 27, 1944. Her body was reburied after the war at Kronberg Castle in Hesse.
