Died in this city on Thursday morning, Aug. 19, 1897, Wm. John Adams, of that dread disease, consumption, aged 40 years.
Deceased had been in poor health for some little time, but up to about two months ago he was found at his past as teamster for Chas. Gillmann, with whom he had been employed for the past 17 or 18 years. He was not compelled to take his bed even for a day, and the evening before death came retired feeling no worse.
His sister, Miss Grace Adams, sat up with him until 11 o'clock, when he persuaded her to retire saying, if need be she would be called. At about 1 o'clock Miss Grace heard her brother moving about in his room, and went to him, and he said he must be taken downstairs, which was done, and immediately after being placed in a chair he closed his eyes and passed off into that sleep that knows no waking in this world.
Four orphan children, who only three years ago, stood weeping over the open grave of their beloved mother, are left, the oldest being 15 and the youngest 9. One, a girl, has been residing with an aunt, Mrs. Cann, at Virginia City, Wyoming.
Mr. Stephen Adams, father of the deceased, who has been visiting a daughter at Wyoming, arrived home too late to see his son, having reached here last Monday afternoon. Two sisters, Miss Sue and Eliza, of Dubuque, besides Miss Grace, of this city, and a brother now residing here, followed the remains of their beloved brother to the grave. Two brothers, one in Texas and the other in Iowa, were unable to come home.
The funeral occurred last Saturday afternoon with interment at Graceland Cemetery.
