Ahn Hyunyeong was born in 1986 in South Korea, to parents Ahn Kyuhee and Hwang Jeongae. He was the beloved younger brother of Ahn Hyunwoong. He was an employee with Cheonghae Shipping, specializing in fireworks displays for special events. He was not registered as a crew member of the Sewol Ferry due to business legalities, but for all intents and purposes, he was a crew member, and he put passengers' lives ahead of his own when the ship began to sink.

Hyunyeong was working when he died in the Sewol Ferry tragedy of April 16, 2014. Out of 476 people on board, 304 died, mostly high school sophomores on a field trip. The Sewol Ferry tragedy was one of the most devastating maritime disasters in the history of the world.
During the sinking of the ship, Hyunyeong gathered with other Sewol stewards and stewardesses to help passengers to safety. According to survivor testimonies, Hyunyeong and two other crew members stacked chairs to form a bridge and physically pulled passengers between the 3rd and 4th floors of the ship when the 3rd floor was flooding. At least a dozen lives were saved this way.

Hyunyeong's body was recovered on May 20, 2014, along with the body of a female student from Danwon High School. Given that they were found in the ship's restaurant, which was off-limits for passengers, it is likely that Hyunyeong was trying to help this student escape. Hyunyeong was cremated and interred at the Incheon Family Cemetery Park with the rest of the Sewol general passenger victims.
