Major League Baseball Manager, Coach. Born Bobby Brooks Winkles, he attended Swifton High School in Arkansas and later enrolled at the Illinois University of Wesleyan, prior to transferring to the University of Colorado where he received his degree in Physical Education. For six seasons, he played Minor League Baseball (1951 to 1958) except for 1953 while he served with the United States Military. In 1959, he began his lengthy coaching career at the collegiate level with the Arizona State University and guided the Sun Devils to three Collegiate World Series Titles (1965, 1967 and 1969). He served as manager of the California Angels from 1973 to 1974 and later served as manager of the Oakland Athletics from 1977 to 1978. Additionally, he served on the coaching staffs of the San Francisco Giants and Montreal Expos.
