Richard Newman was struck by a freight train near Beardstown last Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock and died about four hours later from the results of his terrible injuries. He was walking from Frederick to Beardstown, a distance of about four miles, and was about half way between the two places when the heavy freight, drawn by two engines, came up behind him and whistled, but he apparently did not hear the approaching train and remained on the track. The two engines and twenty cars passed over his body before the train could be stopped. The train crew found him lying beside the track with a ghastly cut in the back of the head, the left leg completely severed in two places above the knee and the right foot and part of the left hand cut off. Notwithstanding his injuries he was conscious and remained so till his death, which followed four hours later. He did not realize, however the extent to which he was injured, and said repeatedly that he had not been hurt. The body was brought here by his brothers-in-law, Lester Stisser and Joseph Fritz, Monday night and the funeral was held Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. from the Presbyterian Church, Rev. M.B. Wiles preaching the funeral sermon. The burial occurred at the Dickinson Cemetery south of Dunlap.
Mr. Newman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Newman of this place. He was the first of their children born in this country, and was 37 years, 7 months and 5 days old at the time of his death. He was a hard-working man and had been employed here at various times on the section and in the coal mines. Since last April he had been working at the Ed Hill brick yard at Frederick, and had finished the day’s work and was on his way to Beardstown when he was killed. His hearing was very defective and it is thought that this was the cause of his being struck by the train.
The deceased leaves, besides the aged parents, five sisters and four brothers: Ann Grundy, Nebraska; Lizzie Hammel and Jennie Chambers of Alta; Myrtis Fritz of Duncan; Bessie Stisser, Princeville, Charles, Alta; John and Benjamin, Princeville; William, Peoria.

Princeville Telephone, July 23, 1908.
