In 1941, she married William Stockdale, Jr. and in this happy union Melba Stockdale was born.
She dedicated her life to Christ at an early age and later became a long-time member of E Street Church of Christ.
Agnes continued her education, and obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Alabama State University. She became one of the first African-American teachers in the county, beginning her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse in Sand Valley. She eventually served in the Oneonta City School System as a teacher until her retirement in 1980.
Upon her husband’s death, she remained a widow for many years. In 1976, she married Robert Hodge and they enjoyed many happy years together. She remained an active member of the community, serving in the Quilter’s Guild and the Retired Teacher’s Association.
Mrs. Hodge is preceded in death by her siblings; Billy Gene Robinson, Mattie Bell White, Addie Mae Hicks, and Frank Robinson; late husbands, William Stockdale and Robert Hodge; and her daughter and son-in-law, Melba Agnes and Rodney S. Williams. She leaves to cherish her memory her siblings, Margaret Ann Polk, Roy Robinson, Gerlean Dawson and Roberta McPherson; her grandchildren, Rodney M. Williams, Melba (David) Kirk; her great-grandchildren, Sarah Mae, Ayodele, and Benjamin; and a loving host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
