Charles of Lorraine, Duc de Mayenne was the second son of François de Lorraine, Duc de Guise, and his wife, Anna d'Este, daughter of Ercole II d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, and Renée of France. He headed the Catholic League during the French Wars of Religion, following the assassination of his brothers at Blois in 1588. He made peace with Henry IV of France in 1596.
He was married on August 6, 1576, to Henriette of Savoy, Marquise de Villars, daughter of Honorat II of Savoy, Marquis de Villars.
