Māori Chief. Te Rauparaha was a Rangatira of the Ngati Toa. He took a leading role in the Musket Wars and was present at the Wairau Affray, the first battle of the New Zealand Wars. He wrote "Ka Mate," the Haka now performed by the All Blacks, the national rugby team of New Zealand. Te Rauparaha was one of the leading land owners prior to European settlement and was a key figure during New Zealand's European colonization. He is believed to of been reinterred on Kapiti Island though his slate headstone still stands in the churchyard of Rangiatea.
