3248 Private C Walker, 1st Battalion the Gordon Highlanders. Deployed with his Battalion to South Africa, sailing on the Cheshire on 9 Nov 1899, arriving at the Cape on 28 Nov. They joined the Kimberley Relief Force under General Lord Methuen who with three brigades was tasked to raise the Boer siege of Kimberley. He was wounded (gunshot wound to the abdomen) at the Battle of Magersfontein on 11 Dec 1899, when the Gordons who were with the supply column were tasked forward to support the Highland Brigade who were suffering terrible losses. He died 3 days later in the Stationary Military Hospital, Orange River Station aged 30 years. The battalion lost 3 officers, including its commanding officer, and 4 men killed, and 2 officers and 35 men wounded. Overall the British losses were heavy, with 22 officers and 188 other ranks killed, 46 officers and 629 other ranks wounded, and one officer and 62 other ranks missing. Pte Walker was buried in the military cemetery at the Orange River Station (grave A10). His remains were reinterred in West End Cemetery, Kimberley after the war. He is also commemorated on the Gordon Highlanders Boer War memorial on the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade, Edinburgh, Scotland (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/251858).
