Ivan Badders
Ivan Badders, member of a farming family which settled in the south Pomona, west Chino area early in the century, died Tuesday at a Pomona care center at the age of 89.

Mr. Badders was a retired L.A. County Fair security guard. He was born in Terre Haute, Indian, on Dec. 18, 1909. His family came to the Chino valley in 1912 and he attended schools here. He drove Chino school buses (1933-1944) and was a head mechanic for the school district in his earlier days. Between 1948 and 1963 Mr. Badders worked for Atlantic Richfield (now Arco), and at the fairgrounds until 1974.

His family owned much of the hill now known as Riverside Terrace, at the head of Towne Avenue, and he was involved in the development of water and roads in the area. Until he went into a retirement home in San Dimas four years ago, he and his second wife Bernice lived on the "hill."

Mr. Badders was a lifelong member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Pomona, served 32 years on the church board, in Sunday School, was superintendent of the church for many years and was a church "father of the year."

Helen, his first wife, of 45 years, preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Ila Mae Messenger of Talent, Oregon; stepchildren Jacqueline Boley of Chino, Joyce Davidson of Pasadena, Walter Johnson of Virginia Beach, Kenneth Johnson of Upland; three brothers, Louie of Pomona, Charles of Hesperia and Everett of Porterville; and sister Nellie Boughton of Paradise, Opal Leighty of La Verne, and Edith Gunstream of Palisades, Colorado.

He leaves two grandchildren, 13 step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at the Pomona First Nazarene Church, followed by entombment at Pomona Mausoleum. There will be visitation today and Sunday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Todd Memorial Chapel in Pomona.
