Mrs Margaret DeFrance, one of the oldest women in Chartiers township, died in her home at McConnells Mills about 2 o'clock this morning, in the 87th year of her age. Mrs. DeFrance was the widow of Hugh C. DeFrance, who for many years was associated with his brother, Allison DeFrance, in operating the old flouring mill at McConnells Mills. Mr. DeFrance died July 21, 1894, nineteen days after he and Mrs. DeFrance had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mrs. DeFrance's maiden name was Sheller, and she and her husband moved to McConnells Mills from the Dutch Fork region in the sixties. Mrs. DeFrance was the last old-time resident of McConnells Mills.
Mrs. DeFrance had been in good health until one week ago yesterday, when she was taken ill. Death was due to the infirmities of age. She was a remarkably well preserved woman for her age, and did her own work until stricken a week ago.
Mrs. DeFrance lived with her granddaughter, Mrs. Elva Rickley. Plans were under way for Mrs. Rickley and Mrs. DeFrance to move to Pittsburgh within a short time. Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs DeFrance. Leah, who died about 35 years ago, and Katherine, who married Dr. S. A. Lacock and died in 1893.
In the large house where Mrs. DeFrance lived the voters of Chartiers township have cast their ballots for more than half a century, and until a little more than thirty years ago, before Chartiers township was divided into election precincts, the voters of that part of Canonsburg which was outside the restricted borough lines went there to vote. The house for many years answered the purpose of a hotel.
The funeral will be held Wednesday, the hour not yet being fixed.
