Aged Negro Woman Is 99 Years Old

Hannah James, aged Negro woman who seved as a child slave in the Captain Jones and Russell Jones families before the Civil War, observed her 99th birthday here Wednesday at the home of a daughter, Annie Hammons, with whom she has made her home for a number of years.
She also served the late Mrs. W. B. Houston and Zula Jones for many years.
The aged Negro woman still is in good health and has an excellent memory. She has four generations of descendants.
A number of oldtime Gonzales residentts were remembering Hannah James on her birthday.

Former Slave Now Ball Fan at 101
Every year Hannah James 101-year-old Negro born in slavery in Gonzales county, is sure of one birthday present she's going to enjoy.
The time for her birthday comes at about the same time as the start of the of the baseball season.
Th aged woman, who lives with her daughter, Annie Hammons, 76, and her granddaughter, Maude Ali say, is an avid listener to Major League Baseball. She follows the teams from the spring exhibit games to the World Series, and rarely misses a broadcast.
She was born to slaves of Capt. Jones p, father of the late MissZula Jones and Mrs. W. B. DuBose.
Still active mentally and physically, she goes to church frequently, and walks to visit neighbors.
Described by her family as a constant Bible reader, she attributes her long life to "serving God, getting plenty of fresh air, and serving other people as she would like to be treated."

Hannah Jones Dies Saturday At Age of 103

Gonzales oldest citizen, HannahJames, 103, died at the Holmes hospital Saturday at about 11:30 a.m. following a short illness.
Services were held Monday from Webster AME church with the pastor, the Rev. J. L. Woodfaulk, in charge. Burial was in the colored city cemetery.
Hannah was born on April 8, 1854, on the Captain Jones plantation some nine miles from Gonzales. Her parents were Dave and Fannie Jones, slaves on the Jones plantation.
After the "breakup" (Civil War) the family moved to town and Hannah was employed with Missrs Zula and Kate Jones and Mrs. W. B. Houston, Miss Anna Nicholson, the A.E. Scheske home and also helped out in the meat market of the late Jim Scheske.
When quite young she was married to Steve James and became the mother of 14 children, six of whom are living.
These include: Annie Hammons, Bessie Jones, Jeff James, the Rev. J. H. James, Mamie James, all of Gonzales; and L. J. Of Dallas.
She leaves 18 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. Deceased are 29 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, a total of 107 descendants.
She attended school in her early life, having as her teacher, James Johnston, grandfather of E. L. (Buddy) Johnson, this city.
Hannah was active until her recent illness,alsoaler in mind, taking interest in life around her.
Acting pallbearers were the grandchildren and great grandchildren. The great great grandchildren were in charge of the flowers.
