Entertainer. As part of the German duo Siegfried & Roy, he entertained millions with their magical act that featured white lions and white tigers. Born Uwe Ludwig Horn in Lower Saxony, Germany, he was raised by his mother after his father was killed during World War II. A family friend and founder of the Bremen Zoo exposed Roy to exotic animals at an early age. He met his partner, Siegfried Fischbacher on a cruise ship where Siegfried performed magic and Roy worked as a waiter. He became Siegfried's assistant and they were later fired for bringing a live cheetah on the ship. After catching their performance on another cruise line, the owner of the Astoria Theater in Bremen, Germany hired them to work at her nightclub. They began performing with tigers there and were recruited in 1967 to work in Las Vegas. They quickly became a Las Vegas staple. From 1990 to 2003 they performed at the Mirage in Las Vegas to sold out crowds. Their act was brought to an abrupt end in October 2003, when Mantecore, a white tiger, attacked Roy in mid show. He suffered severe, life threatening injuries including a severed spine and a stroke. After years of rehabilitation, he was able to talk and walk with assistance. In February 2009, they had their final stage appearance with Mantecore on ABC's television show "20/20." They retired from show business in 2010.
