Actress. A student of film at UCLA and theater at Wichita State University, her extensive career in the arts spanned over six decades. She was a two-time Academy Awards nominee for the category of Best Supporting Actress, for the motion pictures “The Dark at the Top of the Stairs” (1960) and “Sweet Birth of Youth” in 1962. In 1976 she was the recipient of a Tony Award for her role in the theater production of “Kennedy’s Children.” She was a three time Primetime Emmy Award winner for her television work on “NYPD Blue,” “The Indictment: The McMartin Trial” and the television series “Thirtysomething.” She began her motion picture career in an uncredited role in the 1955 film “Picnic.” She went on to appear in over 50 films including “Ice Palace” (1960), “The Couch” (1962), “The Group” (1966), “The Dutchman” (1966), “Juggernaut” (1974), “Beyond the Poseidon Adventure” (1979), “Endless Love” (1981), “As Good as it Gets” (1997), “Angel Eyes” (2001), “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” (2009), “Redwood Highway” (2013), “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” (2015) and in her final film credit of “Periphery” in 2018.
