-----------
Joseph Marshall, aged 73 years, an old and highly respected citizen of Saline county, died at his home, 15 miles south of Marshall, near Wanamaker, on Saturday last at 2 a. m., after a lingering illness. Mr. Marshall was a man of sterling worth, a good citizen and a true friend. He was born and raised in Saline county, and with the exception of ten years passed in California, he had spent his life right here in the county, he was a member of the M. E. Church, South. The funeral was held at the residence, conducted by Rev. Mr. Donly, on Sunday at 8 a.m. Burial at Nelson.
A wife and eleven children survive him, viz., Allen Marshall, Mesdames Mac, Walter and Owen Pile of the neighborhood, Mrs. Joel Scott of Hardeman, Mrs. Stella Meredith of Miami, I. T., Scott and William, who lived with their father, and James and Joseph, who live on adjoining farms.
From the Marshall Republican dated 7/6/1900
---------------
Additional information from the 1881 History of Saline County says that Joseph served in the Mexican War. That was probably during his time in California. He had gone out there to prospect for gold.
