3435 Private A Allan, 1st Battalion the Highland Light Infantry. He deployed to South Africa with his battalion for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Aurania and arrived at the Cape about 11 Nov 1899. They were in the Highland Brigade commanded by Major General Wauchope, part of the Kimberley Relief Force under Lord Methuen. He fought at the battles of Belmont and Modder River, but was killed in action at the battle of Magersfontein. He was initially buried at Magersfontein. Later he was reinterred in West End Cemetery, Kimberley. He is also commemorated on the Highland Light Infantry Boer War memorial in Kelvingrove Park, Glasgow, Scotland (see https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/146455).
