Dee R. Woodland died on May 21, 2020 in Boise, Idaho.
He was born on June 22, 1937 and raised by Richard and Ivy Woodland in Inkom, Idaho. He was adored and at times tolerated by his three sisters – Olive, Doreen, and Gayla. He teased his youngest sister, Gayla, relentlessly. He was known for his shenanigans and often colorful language. Eventually, he became Uncle Dee to many nieces and nephews. Fun times and memories were guaranteed with Crazy Uncle Dee!
Dee spent much of his youth hunting and fishing in the Idaho outdoors. He had explored the area with his horse, Midge and his dog, Bob. His prized possession was a .22 riffle laid across his lap one Christmas morning by his father.
On September 2, 1960, he married Carla Faye Cope. He immediately became the favorite brother-in-law and uncle in her family. They shared many adventures during their 29 years together beginning in Idaho, landing in California, and back to Idaho. It goes without saying they worked hard together building a life for their family and making memories with their children, R.Dee and Rhonda. Dee showed up at their elementary school every Halloween dressed as The Great Pumpkin! He loved coaching R.Dee in Little League and youth sports and enjoyed when both kids competed in athletics. He never missed a game! Not one! He and R. Dee loved shooting pool, and it killed him when R. Dee started winning their fiery games. He is partially credited for Rhonda's love of Disney after finding her the biggest Minnie he could buy on their first visit to Disneyland in 1974. He was always proud of his Sis!
Among his greatest joys, were his grandchildren. He was quick to load Carington and Randee Woodland in his truck and find trouble. They spent hours pounding nails into boards and following Grandpa around getting dirty from head to toe. Soon, his sweet Morgan stole his heart. Oh, how he loved her and she him. She must have beaten him a thousand times at their favorite card game Thirty-One.
Dee was a friend to all in Pocatello. You couldn't go to a restaurant without several people stopping by the table to say hello or give him a hard time. He proudly represented the Bourbon Barrel in the pool and horseshoe leagues and played a mean game of Pinnacle. He was a competitor in the SE Idaho Senior Games for several years. It was with great sadness when his health slowed him down, and he hung up his horseshoes and pool stick. Of course, he remained a loyal, die-hard 49ers fan!
In October 2017, he relocated to Meridian, Idaho to be closer to his daughter, Rhonda and her husband, Kevin. He convinced Kevin to load his old truck on a flat bed and drag it along. For the record, it still runs with over 260,000 miles on it! These final three years of his life he was surrounded and cared for by his family. He loved the drop-in visits with milkshakes and cheeseburgers. He attended dance competitions and every family event and holiday celebration. He became known as Papa Dee to his two great-grandsons, Jaymison and Ryder Woodland. To sweeten the deal, R.Dee and his wife, Mikell, also moved to the area in 2019. It's fair to say these were some of his best times!
