Her husband, Carminantonio "Antonio" Vincenzo Ciardi (originally Ciardó), was a successful insurance agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., who at the age of just 40 in 1919, was killed almost instantly from head injuries when he leapt from a skidding car, driven by a friend, that crashed into a light pole. He left behind his widow and their 6 children - 5 daughters and a son, John, who was just 3 years old.
