3496 Private W Hudson, 2nd Battalion the (Duke of Edinburgh's) Wiltshire Regiment. He deployed with his Regiment to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War sailing on the Gascon on 16 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 7 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment, 1st Royal Irish Regiment, and 2nd Worcestershire Regiment, they formed the 12th Brigade under Major General Clements. They deployed to the Colesberg district. Boer forces attacked their positions around Rensburg between 12-14 Feb 1900 and the battalion lost 14 killed and 57 wounded, and over 100 taken prisoner. The battalion deployed with its brigade to join the main army at Bloemfontein on 2 Apr 1900 and moved to occupy Senekal on 31 May 1900. Pte Hudson died of disease at No 12 General Hospital, Springfontein, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated on the Wiltshire Regiment Boer War memorial in Salisbury Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/100100/).
