Sarah was the daughter of Sarah Sherman(April 26, 1636 Roxbury, MA - 1718 RI) and Thomas Mumford (1625 - Feb. 12, 1692 Kingston, RI).
Her siblings were: Peleg (1659-1745), Abigail (1662-1717) and Thomas. The graves are on the former plantation of the family Mumford and the oldest in RI. Sarah Sherman was murdered after disciplining a slave by the man's son. She was the daughter of the first Secretary of Rhode Island.
Remains of the plantation are held by the Rhode Island Historical Society.
