James W. Ickes, a well known railroad man and highly respected citizen of Altoona died of diabetes Tuesday night, having been ailing for more than a year. He was born in Saville township, two miles west of Ickesburg, this county. He was educated in the common schools of his native township, where he subsequently taught. He removed to Altoona in 1868, where he entered the Pennsylvania Railroad service, soon becoming one of hte most efficent engineers of the Middle Division. Latterly he had been emoloyed by the Company as a stationary engineer. He was a member of the Third Presbyterian church of Altoona, having been elected trustee when the church was organized. He was a Mason, a Son of America and a memberof the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the Relief Department of the Pennsylvania railroad.

He was married February 15, 1870 to Margaretta Baker, of Indiana, Pa. who with the following children survive him; E. Dallas (Ickes); H. Baker (Ickes); G. Bert (Ickes), and Misses Leora (Ickes) and Daisy (Ickes). One sister, Mrs. Catherine Jackman, of Mifflintown, Juniata county, Pa. also survives.

The funeral service was held at 2:20 p.m. at the family residence, 712 Fourth avenue, and was conducted by Rev. J.E. Irvine. Interment was in Oak Ridge cemetery, Altoona.
