5917 Private A Towers, 1st Battalion the (Prince of Wales's Volunteers) South Lancashire Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Canada about 1 Dec 1899 and arrived at the Cape about 20 Dec 1899. Along with the 2nd Royal Lancaster, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, and 1st York and Lancaster Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They were part of the force for the relief of Ladysmith. He fought at Venter's Spruit 20-22 Jan 1900. Some of the battalion fought at Spion Kop on 23 Jan 1900 and were involved in much fighting around Ladysmith. He took part in the march North from Ladysmith to Newcastle, and was involved in operations in the Wakkerstroom district, in the taking of Botha's Pass, and the turning of Laing's Nek. Pte Towers died of pneumonia at No 12 General Hospital, Springfontein, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated on the South Lancashire Regiment Boer War memorial in Queen's Gardens, Palmyra Square, Warrington, Cheshire (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/187965).
