On June 28, 1930, in Alameda, Harold married Alma (Berrum) Nielsen Therp Skilling (1909-1997), whose mother was Dora Christine (Miller) Berrum Verdugo (1889-1980) and Alma's stepfather was Camilo Verdugo (1872-1951).
Harold worked in a Langendorf bakery for many years but resigned from health problems he apparently developed from breathing baking powder. At one time, Alma was a clerk at the Adeline Bake Shop. They had one child, Robert Harold "Bob" Nielsen (b.1936), during their marriage.
