5411 Private J (or G) Brennan, 1st Battalion the Royal Irish Regiment. He deployed with his battalion for South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Gascon on 14 Dec 1899, and arrived at the Cape on 7 Jan 1900. Along with the 2nd Bedfordshire, 2nd Worcestershire, and 2nd Wiltshire, they formed the 12th Brigade under Major General Clements. Shortly after their arrival they were sent to the Colesberg district of Cape Colony. By early Mar 1900 they crossed the Modder River and arrived at Bloemfontein and joined the main army on 2nd April. After 3 May 1900 they were tasked with guarding Bloemfontein, Kroonstad, and the lines of communication. Pte Brennan died of disease at No 3 General Hospital, Kroonstad, Orange Free State aged 26 years. He is also commemorated on the Royal Irish Regiment Boer War memorial in Kickham Barracks, Waterford Road, Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland (see: http://www.irishwarmemorials.ie/Memorials-Detail?memoId=265).
