Louis E. Feldman, of Route 240, West Valley, died Tuesday April 28, 2015 at Mercy Hospital, Buffalo at the age of 85.

He was born April 14, 1930 in West Valley, a son of the late Henry and Dorothy (nee Goodemote) Feldman.

His beloved wife of 61 years, Rose Marie (nee Butzer), whom he married June 30, 1951 died September 13, 2012.

He was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Church, West Valley. While farming for his father he delivered milk to families in West Valley, Machias and Delevan. In 1968, he joined the custodial staff at West Valley Central School and retired in 1985. During that time he was head custodian, ground maintenance and a bus driver. For 30 years, he and Rose owned and operated Star Vending, which serviced Kissing Bridge and several businesses in the surrounding area.

Louie lived music for 70 years, playing steel guitar and dobro, first with his family band in the 1940's and later with other groups, such as Ken Redding and the Valley Boys, Fred Boberg Band, Back Side of 30 and most recently with YesterYear Band. He was an expert square dance caller and people would come from miles to hear him sing. Louie remembered one night calling for 40 sets at The Woodside. He was also chosen to perform in the Langford Church All-Star Band. For the past 21 years, he volunteered to play music at nursing homes such as Jennie B. Richmond and The Pines in Machias, where his band was honored as Volunteers of the Year in 2013.

Grandpa Louie's hobby farm was a main attraction for the grandkids and neighbors, where he raised chickens, ducks, geese and rabbits. We will all remember his maple syrup, hard cider, giant pumpkins and pickle in a jar. For many years he was a beekeeper extraordinaire extracting more than one ton of honey from his hives in one summer.

Louie was a high school athlete where he excelled in basketball making the All-Star basketball team. He was an excellent baseball pitcher in both high school and for the West Valley town team. He was a sports enthusiast and loved watching his children and grandchildren play and coach sports.

He is survived by six daughter; Sharon (Harold) Lango of Boulder City, NV, Mary (Eric) Muth of Doylestown, PA, Kathleen (Sheila Holloway) Feldman of Almond, NY, Janet (Andrew) Medley of Spooner, WI, Linda (Kenneth) Geraghty-Purdy of Gowanda and Patricia (Joseph) Crandall of Cattaraugus; 12 grandchildren; Amy Jo Spicer, Brian (Dawn Hurley) Lango, Leigh (Mikhail) Nakhimovich, Jarrett Scherrer, Rachel & Laura Medley, Michael John Jr. & Christopher Geraghty, Matthew Crandall, Elizabeth (Ryan) Boline, Erin & Sara Crandall; seven great-grandchildren; Mikayla, Haille, Brianna & Devin Spicer, Kayla, Madison & Jacob Hurley; beloved dog, Abby; one sister Eleanor Brown; three brothers Donald, Gerald (Gertrude) and Clifford (Valerie) Feldman and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Ellsworth and Raymond and three sisters, Eunice Linsler, Marilyn Shaffner and Doris Digati.

Memorials may be made to the donor's charity of choice.
