William was the son of Tristram and Margaret (Joyner) Cheney. He spent his youth in Ashburnham. Neither his marriage date nor his wife's surname is known. Her first name is listed on the grave stone as "Rebekah." His first known residence as an adult is Acworth, Cheshire Co., NH. He bought a tract of land in Marlow, NH 18 Sep. 1778 but made his home in the neighboring village of Alstead where he spent the rest of his life. He served during the American Revolution under Capt. Samuel Canfield, Col. Benjamin Bellow's reg't, 3 July 1777 and 21 Sept. 1777, in Ashley's Company "who went to reinforce the Northern Continental Army at Saratoga under General Gates. He enlisted from Marlow 16 July 1779 for one year receiving 60 pounds bounty and billeting money. Children: 1.William, 2.Lewman, 3.Lucy, 4.Margaret, 5.Laura, 6.Amasa, and 7.Rebecca (m. John Lowell). According to Charles H. Pope William died 15 July 1802, however his stone says he died July 25, 1802.
