3878 Private A Hunt, Mounted Infantry Company, 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Derbyshire Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Suez on 28 Nov 1899, arriving in South Africa about 14 Dec 1899. They were deployed to the Sterkstroom-Molteno district in Cape Colony to prevent Boer incursions. They took part in the advance to Bloemfontein and Pretoria, and fought at the battle of Diamond Hill on 11-12 Jun 1900. During the latter part of 1900 and early months of 1901 the battalion did much marching. Pte Hunt was killed in action at Smaldeel Station (now Theunissen), Orange River Colony along with Pte Rose. He was buried at Theunissen and later reinterred at Kroonstad. He is also commemorated on the 1st Battalion (Sherwood Foresters) Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment Boer War memorial at the Church of St Mary, High Pavement, Nottingham, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/145916/).
