FUNERAL OF DOWAGER MARCHIONESS
Member of Old Scots Family
The funeral took place yesterday at the Franciscan Monastery, Crawley, Sussex, of Sybil Dowager Marchioness of Queesnberry, who died at her residence in St. Ann's Court, Nizell's (sp.) Avenue , Hove, on Thursday last, at the age of 91.

Lady Queensberry, who was a daughter of the late Mr. and the Hon. Mrs. Alfred Montgomery and a grand-daughter of the first Lord Leconfield, was the widow of the eighth Marquess of Queensberry, who is chiefly remembered in the sporting world as the author and compiler of the famous Queensberry rules of boxing, and as a former Master of the Dumfriesshire and Worcestershire Foxhounds. (NOTE: Her husband is now known as the 9th Marquess of Queensberry due to a re-numbering for an heir in the line of succession that wasn't previously recognized.)

On her father's side she came from the Scottish Montgomeries of Eglington, a princely Norman family, nearly as old in Scotland as the Douglas family, and on her mother's side could trace her descent back to Jocelyn, the 13th and last Earl of Northumberland. Thus when her marriage took place the direct descendant in the male line of the Douglas killed at the Battle of Otterburn married a descendant of the Percy who was taken prisoner by the Douglases at the same historic battle.

After her marriage, Lord and Lady Queensberry resided for some years at Kinmount House, Annan, where her husband owned extensive estates, including the Torthorwald Castle property, but for the greater part of her life she made her home in London, at Shelley's Folly, Sussex and Hove.

Lady Queensberry, who was a noted beauty, was a sister of Mrs. Finch, of Burley-on-the-Hill, and there is at Burley-on-the-Hill an angelic picture of the two sisters painted by Watts. She had a remarkable personality, devoted her life to philanthropic purposes, and almost to the last retained her faculties. She became a Catholic in her 78th year. One of her sons is Lord Alfred Douglas, the poet.

The late Marchioness was well known in the Border district, and occasionally stayed at the residence of Major and Mrs. C. H. Scott Plummer, Sunderland Hall, Selkirk.

Yesterday's funeral was preceded by Requiem Mass, which was offered in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, Brighton, and which was attended by a large company of mourners.
