John Sholto Douglas, 8th Marquess of Queensberry, the eldest son Archibald William Douglas, 7th Marquess of Queensberry, and his wife, Caroline Margaret Clayton. He was an outspoken atheist; endorsed the code of rules governing conduct in boxing known as the "Queensberry Rules"; and played a pivotal role in the downfall of the Irish author and playwright Oscar Wilde.

His ashes and gravestone are in the family burial ground on Gooley Hill on the estate of Kinmount House. His family disregarded his instructions within his will as to what to do with his ashes and his desire to not have a grave marker.

A cenotaph exists within the family mausoleum at Cummertrees Churchyard.
