Obituary and additional biographical information about Lenorah Barnett.

Obituary:
Mrs. Leonora Barnett, born Aug. 19, 1839, died Feb. 18, 1892, at the residence of her brother, James Barnett, Indianola, Ill.

She was a woman of delicate constitution, having weak lungs from childhood. A slight exposure brought on a severe cold which resulted in her death, after an illness of a few days.

She was married in the fall of '67 to Amos Barnett, who died March 24, '70. They lost their only child in infancy.

Thirty years ago she became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and lived a consistent christian life. The family bible was her companion and the Savior was her friend.

During her brief illness she suffered much from weakness but bore it all with calmness and fortitude. To her pastor she expressed her perfect willingness to go and manifested no fear of death.

The family of her brother, James Barnett, with whom she had resided so long and unto whom she had greatly endeared herself by kind words and loving deeds feel very keenly her loss.

Additional biographical information:

Lenorah Barnett was born in Illinois, probably Vermilion County where the family lived. Her parents were James Barnett and his second wife Rosanna (Neal) Barnett.

Lenorah's father James died in 1866. His will bequeathed to Lenorah about 22 acres of land in Vermilion County, Illinois and about 103 acres in Edgar County.

Lenorah married Amos Barnett on October 16, 1868 in Edgar County, Illinois. In her pension application as the widow of a Civil War veteran, Lenorah said "My husband and I were cousins. My name being Barnett before marriage as well as after. We were brothers children …" In 1858 Amos's sister Nancy Barnett had married Lenorah's half-brother William Barnett.

Lenorah and Amos had an infant son who was born August 18, 1869 and died nine days later. The child was never given a name.

Amos died March 24, 1870 at age 30 in Vermilion County, Illinois. He had developed chronic health problems when he was a soldier in the war that limited his activities, and ultimately were fatal.

At the time of the 1870 US census, Lenorah and her sister Mary Elizabeth Barnett were living together in Vermilion County. Both had significant land holdings, presumably from their inheritances from their father. They were living next to their widowed half-sister Armilda (Barnett) Yapp.

Lenorah and Mary began living with their brother James and his family. In April, 1878 James took them and his family to Jewell County, Kansas for about 4 1/2 years, reportedly for his wife's health. Their half-brother William Barnett had been in Jewell County for several years. The annual list off residents of Jewell County, Kansas has Lenorah and Mary with James and his family from 1879 to 1882. They were back in Vermilion County, Illinois in late 1882 when Mary Elizabeth died.

Lenorah apparently lived her remaining years with her brother James and his family in Vermilion County, Illinois. She made a will in July, 1888 that included "I give and bequeath to my Brother James Barnett and his Family all my household goods and personal property belonging to me and also six-hundred dollars out of the real estate for his trouble in taking care of me while living with." She specified that the rest of her property would be divided equally between her brothers and sisters. After her death, Robert Barnett was appointed administrator of her estate and her living siblings were listed as Nancy Barnett, Armilda Yapp, William Barnett, and James Barnett.

The obituary above does not give her burial location and she is not listed in The Master Index of Known Burials for Vermilion Co., Illinois. Her husband, baby, and parents were buried in the Lebanon Cemetery, Indianola, Illinois. However, that cemetery was for the most part (but not entirely) inactive at the time she died (based on death dates on Find A Grave). Her brother James and sister Mary Elizabeth were buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Indianola, Illinois. She was presumably buried at one of these cemeteries.

Her name was spelled Lenorah in her pension application, in her will, and in her father's will, but has sometimes been spelled as Lenora or Leonora in other records.

Sources and additional information are provided in her WikiTree profile (Barnett- 12077).
