James Barnett was born about 1794 in Pennsylvania. His parents were Robert Barnett (1772-1852) and Nancy Davis. The family moved from Pennsylvania to Bourbon County, Kentucky about 1796.

James married Hannah Conaway on July 9, 1818 (license was issued July 4, 1818). James and Hannah apparently stayed in Bourbon County. Their daughter Armilda was born in Bourbon County in 1822, according to Armilda's obituary.

James and Hannah had six children: Nancy, Chrystian, Armilda, Sarah, William, and Robert. The list is not ordered by age. Armilda's obituary says that her mother died when Armilda was eight years old, which would have been after January 28, 1830.

On September 2, 1830 in Bourbon County, Kentucky James Barnett obtained a license to marry Rosanna Neal (date of marriage not recorded). They soon moved to Vermilion County, Illinois. James bought 80 acres of land from the US government in Carroll Township Section 36 in October, 1831.

Seven children were born to James and Rosanna. They were: Emily, Eliza, Lenorah, Mary, Willis, James, and Harris. Armilda's obituary said that Armilda was the second of thirteen children, which is consistent with the lists of children for the two marriages. At the time of the 1850 US census, James and Rosanna Barnett were still living in Vermilion County, Illinois. William Barnett age 24 was with them, along with James and Rosanna's children Eliza age 16, Lenorah age 12, [Mary] Elizabeth age 9, James age 6, and Harrison age 4. All five of the younger children were born in Illinois.

James and Rosanna remained in Vermilion County, Illinois until their deaths, Rosanna in September, 1866 and James in December, 1866. They share a gravestone in the Lebanon Cemetery. James made a will on March 2, 1866 that stated that he had six living children: William, James, Lenorah, Mary, Nancy, and Armilda. His children Chrystian, Sarah, and Robert from his first marriage and Emily, Eliza, Willis, and Harrison from his second marriage apparently died before March, 1866. His will distributed to his wife and children about 179 acres in Vermilion County and 263 acres in Edgar County, Illinois.

There has been confusion about the genealogy for James Barnett because a cousin named James Barnett also had a large farm in Carroll Township, had previously lived in Bourbon County, Kentucky, died about one year earlier, and was buried in the same cemetery. Both men had sons named James, Robert, and William. The other man was James D. Barnett, who was born in 1803 in Kentucky and was the son of James's uncle George Barnett. Even the earliest writings mistakenly confused these two men. For example, the 1889 book Portrait and Biographical Album Vermilion County, Illinois says on page 603 that James Barnett was a native of Kentucky, came to Illinois in 1828, and his mother was Delila Davis. That is true for James D. Barnett, but not for this James Barnett. The book does appear to have the names of James Barnett's two wives and children correct except for minor spelling differences.
