Johann Peter's parents were Peter Stuempges and Mathilda Vits Stuempges, who lived and died in Germany. Johann immigrated to America from Germany in 1849 with wife, Gertraudt (Gertrude) and sons Henry, Johann, William and Julius and daughter Johanna (who is buried in this cemetery). The family settled on a farm in the town of Newton. Sons Henry and Johann served in the Civil War.
Letter dated 1982 from Pastor Stuebbe of Salem-Ebenezer details the children of son Henry. The letter also indicates Johann & Gertrude were married in 1797, but Oct 22, 1825 is the correct date.
Gertrude's maiden name was Vits, same as Johann's mother's maiden name. Gertrude outlived Johann and may not be buried in this cemetery. She is with son William in Illinois on the 1860 Census. To date (2020) no gravesites found for wife, Gertrude or son, William.
