Funeral services for Susan Allen, 87, of Winona, who died Friday, March 3, 2006, at her home, will be at 2 p.m. today at First Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Allen was born and reared in Greenwood, where she graduated from Greenwood High School. She met her husband when she came to Winona to teach dancing. The Susan Allen School of Dance was formed in 1940, and is still operating, now in its 66th year. Mrs. Allen has taught thousands of students in Winona and the surrounding areas, and has had numerous recitals over the years. Her love of dance and children and her talent for teaching went hand-in-hand, and she considered her students to be family. Her family says that she was loved and respected by many students, both former and present.

Mrs. Allen was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winona. She was a charter member and secretary of the Mississippi Chapter of the National Association of Dance & Affiliated Arts Inc. She was a lifetime member of Dance Teachers United and the Winona Junior Auxiliary, and was presented the Community Service Award by the Winona Junior Auxiliary in 1998. She was also a member of the Montgomery County Arts Council, where she was recently chosen to receive its first Lifetime Achievement Award.

Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, James Edward "Buddy" Allen; her parents, George W. Chambless and Hattie Aaron Chambless; four brothers; and two sisters.

She is survived by two daughters, Jane Allen May of Memphis, Tenn., and Claire Allen Gaines and her husband, Wayne, of Winona; one sister, Hattie Hyde of Hot Springs, Ark.; four grandchildren, Derek Allen May, Edward Newman May and Ashley Gaines Bauch and her husband, Stephen, all of Memphis, and Heather Gaines Rodgers and her husband, Stan, of Winona; and one great-grandson, Jackson Thomas Bauch of Memphis.

The Rev. Dr. Harold Richardson will officiate at the services.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Vincent "Sandy" Jackson, Bob Graves, Jim Caffey, Jerry Hoover, Jim Corbin, Tim James and Eddie Howard.

Visitation was from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday, March 4, 2006, at Lee Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 302 Summit St., Winona, MS 38967, or to the Winona High School Auditorium Restoration Fund, 301 Fairground St., Winona, MS 38967.
