Ethan was the son of David and Rebecca Pool Armstrong. He was married to Miriam Collin May 15, 1851. Ethan came to Troy, NY in 1845 and set up a wholesale grocery business with a partner under the name of Armstrong and Squires. Ethan and Miriam had homes both in Fayetteville and Troy. His death followed the second of two paralytic strokes that happened in a period of two weeks.
