3431 Private C Rose, 2nd Battalion the (King's Own) Yorkshire Light Infantry. The Battalion was in South Africa at the start of the war having been brought from Mauritius, and was employed at strategical points in Cape Colony until Lord Methuen was ready to advance with the Kimberley relief force. They then formed part of the 9th Brigade along with the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers, half of the 1st Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and the 2nd Northampton Regiment. He was at the battles of Belmont, Modder River and Magersfontein. In the advance from Bloemfontein they joined 20 Brigade and were involved in heavy fighting around Lindley. On 25th June a large convoy left Kroonstad for Lindley, escorted in part by the 2nd Battalion (King's Own) Yorkshire Light Infantry, and on 26 and 27 Jun were heavily attacked by a Boer force 1500 strong. Pte Rose was killed in the action at Lindley, Orange Free State. He is also commemorated on the (King's Own) Yorkshire Light Infantry Boer War memorial in the KOYLI Chapel, York Minster, Deansgate, York, North Yorkshire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/263161/).
