James E. 'Jim' LeMonds Sr.

James Edward (Jim) LeMonds Sr. died on Sept. 20, 2011, in Longview.

He was born to William and Faye (Plum) LeMonds near Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sept. 21, 1920. The family worked as tenant farmers in South Dakota and Iowa before moving to Castle Rock in 1936.

Jim met Evelyn Berndt while she was working at the Hansen & Becker Grocery in Castle Rock. They married on Nov. 23, 1940, and lived in the Castle Rock area for the next 71 years.

Jim worked in the woods as a climber, choker-setter and chaser until he was severely injured in a logging accident near Siletz, Ore., in July 1940. After recovering from his injuries, he began working as a log truck driver in 1942.

Over the course of the next 44 years, he hauled logs for dozens of timber companies and independent logging contractors through the Northwest.

During his younger years, Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Later in life, his hobbies included gardening, reading, and attending his grandchildren's activities. He was a member of the Castle Rock Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

Jim was an accomplished storyteller and possessed an expansive knowledge of local history. He was a generous person and a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, great-grandfather, uncle and friend.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lorraine Seiner; and his brother, Bob.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; two sons, James Jr. (Sherry) and Dave (Diane); a brother, Cliff (Joyce); granddaughters Kim Hanley, Kami LeMonds (Michael), Chelsey LeMonds and Carley LeMonds; great-grandsons Carter Hanley, Cameron Hanley, Samuel Raheem and Nicholas Raheem; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim's friends and family members are invited to share a celebration of his life with reminiscing and storytelling at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cowlitz Regional Conference Center at 1900 Seventh Ave. in Longview.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Castle Rock Bike Park in Jim's memory. Checks can be made to the North County Recreation Association and mailed to NCRA, P. O. Box 651, Castle Rock, WA 98611.

Hubbard Funeral Home is in charge.
