This is not AnnMary Brown Hawkins, in whose name the Annmary Brown Memorial was built, but instead is her older sister. The little girl died just thirteen days after her younger sister was born. This new baby became her older sister's namesake. This unusual name shared by the sisters was intended to honor the memory of their father's mother and his stepmother. Anna Carter, Nicholas Brown's mother, died in 1798, when he was six years old. Three years later, his father married Mary Bowen Steele (who was Ann Carter Brown's cousin). Nicholas and Caroline Clements Brown compounded the names of these two women into the unusual name the family pronounced "Annm'ry."
