Son of late Dan and Dottie Ward Merritt. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Valley Forge Church of God and later attended Roan Street Church of God.
Mr. Merritt was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater where he was wounded in 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a former member of the Captain Lynn H. Folsom V.F.W. Post #2166 and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over fifty years, Nell Stewart Merritt; a sister, Ruth Oxendine; an infant sister and an infant brother.
Survivors include a son, Larry Merritt and his wife, Nancy, Elizabethton; two daughters, Vivian Newman and her husband, Jim, Madisonville, TN, and Linda Conner Parker and her husband, Pat, Johnson City; five grandchildren, Mike Merritt and his wife, Mitzi, Kenneth Merritt and his wife, Kelly, Diane Dugger and her husband, Charles, Sarah Newman and Ricky Conner and his wife, Heather; five great-grandchildren, Adam and Ellie Dugger and Katie, Clayton and Karie Merritt; a sister, Myrtle Sims, Elizabethton; and two brothers, Billy Merritt and his wife, Sue, and Bobby Merritt and his wife, June, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
