AKARD, Margaret, born 15-06-1861, Jersey County, Illinois, died 22-12-1955, buried 27-12-1955, Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Margaret Akard, one of the older residents of Jersey County, died Thursday night, December 22, in Alton, following an extended period of failing health. Funeral services for the non-agenarian were held at the Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville at two o'clock Tuesday afternoon, December 27, with Reverend F. W. Schwarzlose officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mrs Akard was born in Jersey County, June 15, 1861, a daughter of the late Cam and Delia Peck Lurton. Her age at the time of death was ninety-four years, six months and seven days. Mrs Akard and her late husband, Benjamin Akard, were in the grocery business in Jerseyville for over fifty-two years and operated a neighborhood store in the western part of the city. The decedent was a charter member of the Jerseyville Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and in her younger years was an active member of the Steelman Camp, Royal Neighbors of America in Jerseyville. She is survived by one son, Lurton Akard of Kirkwood; one sister, Mrs. Blanche Cononi of Italy, two grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
