Verlie was born in Erin, Tennessee to the late Russell and Emma Ramey Macklin. She had one beloved brother, Russell, Jr., who preceded her in death.
A walk through visitation will be held Sunday, July 19, 2020 from 1- 5 p.m., with family present at 4 p.m., at V.K. Ryan & Son Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be Monday, July 20, 2020 at 10 a.m. at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens.
After receiving her high school diploma from Burt High School, Clarksville, TN, she furthered her education at A&I State College, now Tennessee State University. She earned a bachelor degree in Elementary Education and certification in Chemistry.
After graduation from college, she married the late Clarence Riley and moved to Columbia, TN. To this union one son, Timothy, was born.
Verlie started her teaching career in Erin at Hensley Elementary and Junior High School, where her father served as principal. She also taught at Harlan, College Hill and Riverside Elementary Schools in Columbia. Verlie was a loving, caring and nurturing teacher for 39 years. She retired in 1999.
Verlie loved the Lord and was a devoted member of St. Paul AME Church. She served as a trustee, chaired the Church Souvenir Book, and tutored many children through the years, serving wherever she was needed until her health failed. Being dedicated and faithful to the task that God had assigned to her, she served well this present age and now she is at rest.
Her civic and social commitment included membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Nashville Chapter, I.B.H. Day Care Center Board of Directors, Retired Teachers Association, Maury Regional Hospital Board, Maury County Democratic Women and a volunteer at Maury Regional Hospital to mention a few.
She leaves to cherish her memory and sweet spirit, a faithful and loving son, Timothy, his wife Sheila, a dedicated daughter-in-law. Granddaughter, Brittany Smith, Dallas, TX; grandsons, Reginald Wyatt, Macon, MS, Austin Wyatt, Memphis, TN; great-grandchildren, Jarvis, Braylon, Austin and Joyden Wyatt; niece, Elsie Mayberry, Lewisburg, TN; devoted cousins, Leatrice Moore, Westchester, IL, Judy (Elmore) Jordon, Melvin (Ann) Black, Victor (Rhonda) Moore, Nashville, TN, and The Ramey Family of Erin, TN; godchildren, Don Dooley, Jr., Vivian McKnight, Wanda Grandberry, Debra, Dexter, Kay, and Demetrius Dooley. Special friends, Shirley Newbern, Barbara Frierson, Agnes Young, Martha Sykes, Faye Walker, Mr. and Mrs. Charles McFall, Mary Canty, Myrtle Birdsong Watts and many other relatives and friends.
